A Musically Oblivious 8th Grader post.
At a wedding your niece hears "Hallelujah" and says she loves this song from Shrek. Leonard Cohen turns slowly in his grave. You don't mention that you thought the same for years. In the car the radio plays a song you love. Your passenger says "oh, the one from the advert". It's from 1983. It is also, to be fair, from the advert. At the office party a graduate asks if Queen is the one about the Queen. You open your mouth to explain, then remember you once thought Pink Floyd was a person. Your teenager calls it "that TikTok song". It was your first dance. You cried to it at 2 in the morning in a field. It now plays under a man falling off a scooter. **Why it caught on:** the photo of a smiling teenage girl on a grey colour wheel was just a teenager in a photo; the character was invented entirely by strangers' jokes. Every generation's thirteen year olds think the cover is the original, and every grown up was once one of them.
